In an attempt to draw a bit more attention to its latest line of P55-based motherboards, MSI has just announced that one of its high-end motherboards has been used in an world record-breaking overclocking set-up, which saw Intel's Core i7 860 processor taken all the way up to 5.39GHz, from its stock frequency of 2.8GHz. The board, which is MSI's flagship model in the P55 series, has been titled P55-GD80 and is said to deliver some of MSI's unique performance features, including the DrMOS, SuperPipe and OC Genie technologies.

According to a recent press statement on the part of the Taiwan-based motherboard maker, the aforementioned Intel processor has been successfully overclocked to 5.39GHz, consequently leading to a new world record in terms of CPU performance. The overclocking process was conducted by 'coolaler', a famous overclocking enthusiast, but the specific details regarding the overclocking process itself haven't been delivered. We aren't exactly sure how the overclocking was done, but considering the reported speeds, there's a good chance that some liquid nitrogen was involved.

The platform has been designed for some of Intel's latest Core i5 and Core i7 processors and features an LGA 1156 socket. The board can support a maximum of 16 GB of DDR3 memory, while the three PCI-Express x16 graphics slots are ready to enable support for the latest high-end graphics cards on the market, including AMD's latest Radeon HD 5850 and Radeon HD 5870. For bragging rights, the platform has been designed to take advantage of MSI's OC Genie, SuperPipe and DrMOS technologies.

MSI appears to focus most of its latest high-end products on overclocking, a segment for computer enthusiasts that spend their time looking for new ways to break world records in terms of performance. Their latest P55-GD80 motherboard makes no exception to the rule and enables support for Intel's latest line of mainstream processors.
