The company will rely on SandForce controller chips from LSI

Yet another company will soon add its name to the list of SSD manufacturers, one that is already world-famous for its motherboards, graphics cards and laptops.

The IT player that will soon launch SSDs is none other than MSI (short for Micro-Star International), according to something that the folks at TechPowerUp found.

The plans became known after MSI signed a deal with none other than LSI, the company that recently bought SandForce and got to the bottom of a flaw in its chips to boot.

MSI hasn't said anything about them, nor has it updated its website in any way, but LSI did change something on its site: the SandForce-Driven SSD page list.

Found here, it shows all companies that make drives with SF SSD controllers. MSI is marked as “Coming Soon.”

We don't really know what “soon” is. Historically, that word has meant everything from a few hours to several months (we're banking on between a few weeks and one or two months in this case).

It bears noting that Micro-Star International is not completely lacking in SSD expertise. People who remember the GT60 and/or GT70 might also know that it had a SSD RAID solution made by MSI.

Sure, the mSATA SSDs actually came from SanDisk, but the RAID 0-type configuration was put together by the laptop maker.

We are fairly certain that, when the first generation of storage units is ready, Micro-Star will broadcast it loud and clear.

It will be a change from the way it handled its cases. People may not know it, but MSI has had some desktop enclosures for sale since early 2012 (the Interceptor).

The reason for the low consumer awareness is that the company did not issue any press releases about them. MSI might leave its SSDs undocumented as well, but we strongly doubt it.
