Back at CeBIT 2014, MSI pulled the veil off the GT70 Dominator laptop aimed at hardcore gamers, which took advantage of the high-end NVIDIA GeForce 870M GPU.

Now, MSI is rolling out the third generation of its limited edition series, in the form of the MSI GT70 Dominator Dragon Edition. With this occasion, the company is also bringing out a new version of the GT72 2PE Dominator Pro (which we caught a glimpse of at Computex).

The limited edition laptop comes with a lively and visually aggressive design, boasting a metal casing in vivid red, on which MSI has painted a dragon – the symbol of the company’s gaming lineup.

Compared to the original Dominator, the processor resting under the hood of the Dragon Edition is a bit more powerful, coming in the form of an Intel Core i7-4810MQ clocked at 2.7GHz.

Apart from that, the specifications remain the same. The laptop arrives with a 17.3-inch full HD screen and takes advantage of the same NVIDIA GeForce 870M GPU.

The RAM can reach up to 32GB, while the storage can be offered in the form of hard drives or hybrid solutions with 128GB SSD mSATA. Moreover, there’s an optical Blue-ray drives, Wi-Fi dual-band and Gigabit Ethernet LAN Killer E2200.

The list is completed by a 720p webcam, five USB ports (three 3.0), HDMI out, mini DisplayPort, VGA, audio jacks for headphones and microphone, SD card reader and a 9-cell battery.

Currently, MSI offers two Dragon editions one with 8GB of RAM and the other with 12GB of RAM. The first one will ship out for $1,549 / €1,138 a pop, while the second will take you back with $1,699 / €1,248.

Last but not least, we have the MSI GT72 which is basically the Dominator Pro GT70 revamped, which comes with a more aesthetically pleasing design with simple and stylized lines.

On top of that, MSI has redesigned the touch pad which is now larger and has changed the cooling system, which is now pushing hot air through the rear and side grills.

However, in terms of hardware nothing has changed. The device arrives with a full HD 17-inch display and runs on the Intel Core i7 Haswell architecture fitted with 32GB of RAM.

In the storage department, there are different combinations with two SSD configurations SuperRAID up to 384GB, along with the traditional hard drive and 750GB 7200 RPM.

Compared to the Dragon edition, MSI is throwing in NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 880M, which is the highest that can be offered. Hence, the device’s price starts at a hefty $2,500 / €1,837.
