On April 18, shots were fired on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus. Information shared with the public says that the shots were fired near Building 32 (i.e. the Stata Center).

“At 10:48 PM today gunshots were reported near Building 32 (Stata) which is currently surrounded by responding agencies,” MIT said.

Apparently, one MIT police officer got hit and died shortly after, while being transported to the Mass General Hospital.

“There are gunshots reported in the vicinity of Building 32 (Stata Center). Area is cordoned off. Stay away from area,” reads a statement issued on the official website of the MIT around 11 p.m. local time.

Following the shooting, authorities arrived at the campus and secured the perimeter.

“Responding agencies are actively investigating the situation, which remains very fluid at this time. Police continue to sweep the campus. Stay indoors and remain inside until further notice,” MIT warned students and staff on April 19, at 12:28 a.m. local time

According to The Examiner, the shooter has not yet been caught. Because of this, the campus is still on lockdown.

“Please remain indoors. Police have NOT determined that the campus is safe,” MIT added about one hour later.

The same source informs us that no other injuries have been reported. Still, detailed information is yet to be made available.

The building coordinated off by police officers houses the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, and the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy.

Presently, an investigation is being carried out. Both the police officers present at the scene and MIT consider the situation to be extremely dangerous.

“Although the situation is considered active and extremely dangerous, an investigation is underway,” MIT said.

The MIT campus where the shooting occurred is located at 77 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. More news is expected to soon be posted on the official website for the MIT.

[UPDATE] It appears that the campus is now safe and that the suspect no longer finds himself in the area.

“MIT Police have determined that the suspect in this evening’s shooting is no longer on campus. It is now safe to resume normal activities. Please remain vigilant in the coming hours,” MIT says.
