SQL Server codenamed Denali is now in the final stages of the development process with early adopters testing the third Community Technology Preview release for quite some time now.

Microsoft is gearing up to release the next iteration of its data platform in the first half of 2012, under the commercial moniker SQL Server 2012.

At the same time, the software giant is also building the next major version of a solution accelerator which will streamline migrations to SQL Server 2012, in addition to a number of other Microsoft on premises and Cloud technologies.

The Redmond company released recently a Beta development milestone of Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit 6.5. Among other products, the MAP Toolkit 6.5 is designed to lay nice with SQL Server 2012.

Customers leveraging both SQL Server and the MAP Toolkit and looking to provide feedback to Microsoft on their experience can now do just that.

The company launched the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit v6.5 Beta - SQL Server Feature Survey on Microsoft Connect, and is inviting customers to share input on the two offerings.

“Along with the release of the MAP Toolkit 6.5 beta, we are making a survey available to capture your experience with the SQL Server scenarios within the MAP Toolkit. The information that we gather in the survey will help us with the next major release of the MAP Toolkit,” revealed Microsoft’s Peter Saddow.

The questions of the survey are obviously focused on the SQL Server and MAP Toolkit duo, and customers have a real chance to tell Microsoft just how the two technologies can work better together.

Of course, early adopters can continue downloading the pre-release versions of MAP Toolkit 6.5 and SQL Server 2012 and test them in tandem.

“If you are unfamiliar with the MAP Toolkit, some of the “SQL Server” scenarios includes the following:

• Discovery of SQL Server including SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, and SQL Server “Denali” across your enterprise.

• Use the MAP Toolkit to full details on your existing database sprawl SQL and non-SQL databases to Migrate to the Database Consolidation Appliance.

• Use the MAP Toolkit to discovery Oracle, MySQL, and Sybase and then use the SQL Server Migration Assistant to migrate to SQL Server.

• SQL Server Usage Tracking to track software usage and client access history in your environment,” Saddow added.
