Leading mobile operator in Singapore MobileOne (M1) announced today that it managed to successfully complete a 100 Mbps data call on its trial LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. According to the wireless carrier, it thus becomes the first South Asian operator to achieve the milestone while using commercial LTE hardware and software.

At the same time, the carrier also announced that the data call had been made at its M1’s flagship store in Singapore, where the company was at the moment trialing and showcasing applications over LTE. In addition, the company notes that the data call was made in collaboration with infrastructure solutions provider Nokia Siemens Networks.

“I am delighted with the completion of today’s data call, which met our requirements for low latency, high speed, and reliability,” said Patrick Scodeller, chief technical officer at M1. “The ongoing trial will let us obtain firsthand experience of Nokia Siemens Networks’ commercially ready LTE hardware and software, based on its Flexi Multiradio base stations. Our network modernization contract with Nokia Siemens Networks represents the first steps in our evolution towards LTE, and this trial helps pave the way to faster and better quality mobile broadband services in the future.”

The mobile phone carrier also revealed that it would also showcase High Definition (HD) TV streaming on LTE, along with high-speed file downloads over the trial network, and that the demonstrations would be made at the flagship store until the end of March 2010. Nokia Siemens Networks' solution, which is expected to offer a smooth evolution from 3G to LTE, will be used in the process.

“LTE will not only enable a rich end-user experience but also help drive new business opportunities for operators like M1,” said Ricky Corker, head of Asia Pacific, Nokia Siemens Networks. “The technology is rapidly approaching commercial introduction in many markets, and trials such as these are proof of LTE’s potential to deliver fantastic mobile broadband.”
