Some women pay a very high price for their quest for long, thicker and more beautiful hair, especially if they turn to using hair extensions on a regular basis. Tennis ace Serena Williams is a good example of that.

The Daily Mail has a batch of recent photos of Serena sporting what looks like a huge balding spot right on the crown of her head.

Since the hairless patch looks like what we've already seen on other female celebrities, like Naomi Campbell and Victoria Beckham, the only possible explanation is that Serena too has been damaging her mane with extensions.

“The 30-year-old sportswoman was seen with a chunk of hair missing from the middle of her part as she left a late night dinner in Hollywood with her socialite pal Brittny Gastineau,” the British publication writes.

Indeed, pictures show Selena with curly hair that cascades around her face and down to her shoulders, in a marked contrast to what's going on on the top of her hair, where a very large chunk is missing.

The Mail says this can only be the result of wearing hair extensions, which are known to make the hair thinner until it eventually breaks.

“According to hairfinder.com, 'traction alopecia' is the name of the type of hair loss associated with hair braiding, weaving, and the wearing of hair extensions,” the Mail writes.

“Celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears are all said to have suffered hair loss as a result of their extensions,” adds the tab.

Britney's problems stemming from hair extensions are well documented, with the paparazzi often photographing her with her hair a mess and with bald patches noticeable from a distance.

In fact, word in the blogosphere has it, if there's one celebrity who would be perfectly suited to tell women from all corners of the world that extensions are a bad idea, Britney is it.
