Lords of the Fallen is an upcoming role-playing game currently being developed as a team effort by Deck 13 and CI Games Studio. Producer Tomasz Gop has recently shared some insight into the development process.

The world of Lords of the Fallen is a richly mythological one, where the focus is the struggle between man and the divine. A long time ago, humanity imprisoned their god and its armies. Now, demons from the fallen god's army have started to roam the world.

The main storyline will be quite short, with players having the possibility to rush through it in about 15 hours, but there will be a lot of independent side material to explore, offering a potentially infinite amount of replayability.

The game will not focus entirely on its story, its developers aiming to put the emphasis on gameplay, less along the lines of traditional role-playing games and more in line with how action role-playing games work, the team citing The Witcher series as inspiration.

The team decided to deliver a semi-open world approach, as opposed to the sandbox experience most modern role-playing games tend to offer.

“[This was a] decision [we] made at the very start – we’re not a sandbox game, we’re not an orthodox RPG – we’re an Action RPG,” Producer Tomasz Gop was quoted as saying by Only SP. He added that “time, money and quality” were also important factors in this decision.

The character classes will follow the classical three archetypes of Cleric, Rogue and Fighter, and players will be able to find and craft their gear as they progress through the game, as well as purchase stat points with experience points.

“Cutting the long story short, it's not unlike anything before,” Gop stated regarding Lords of the Fallen's combat system. “It’s more like all the best games you've played before. We're aiming at getting the different proportions of ingredients from RPGs, fighter games and even strategies into one big bowl to make a soup that is… spicy, filling and addictive,” he carried on.

He also mentioned that the game would be entirely a single-player affair, stating that “it's just this particular kind of experience that people will always keep looking for. I'll never forget my time spent with games like Deus Ex or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.”

Lords of the Fallen is scheduled for a Fall 2014 release for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms, but the developers refrained from sharing a specific date.
