It's one of the painful consequences of most breakups and we've all been there and done it at least once in our lives. The "post-break-up makeover" syndrome is something ladies are definitely familiar with, and as much as we'd all like to think of it as part of the natural course of life, the truth is it's a manifestation of pain as well as a sign of a lady's desire to show the world she's just fine by herself, thank you very much. Fashion-wise, nasty breakups are marked by a bitter determination to show him exactly what he's missing, and this particular desire drives us ladies into making over-the-top fashion choices and even crossing the thin red line between stylish and tacky.

The beautiful Liv Tyler has announced earlier this month that her husband Royston Langdon and her were planning to get a divorce. Last night, however, Liv made an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman and did her best to look every inch the glamorous, independent single girl ready to tackle life and have fun on her own. And while the attitude in itself is quite understandable (and admirable at the same time), the usually impeccable Liv took her efforts a little too far, sporting a rather revealing black mini-dress with a lace inset, a tottering pair of high heels and a rather garish shade of red lipstick that pushed her look more on the tacky than on the classy side.

The actress overdid her makeup a bit and put on too much foundation, opting for a smoky-eye look that gave her a rather harsh air. She also decided to use a very strong shade of red instead of choosing to go for a softer, more natural look for her lips in order to counter-balance the strong eye makeup. On the whole, Liv looked slightly tired and distinctly over-the top, in rather shocking contrast with her previous, softer, more glamorous red carpet appearances. Let's hope this was a one-time offense and that we'll have our usual red carpet darling Liv back in no time, fresh-looking and graceful as always.
