It won't be called the same

LittleBigPlanet is one of the most innovative games that appeared before the 2008 holiday season. The game blew critics away with its fun platforming and its intriguing puzzles, but didn't manage the huge sales that both Media Molecule, its creator, and Sony, its publisher, had hoped for. It seems that the small game just didn't have a chance against all of the sequels that appeared before the holidays.

But the two companies still have hope in the game, as they emphasize the fact that its value will grow by leaps and bounds in time, and that, for a new IP, it did very well. The added value strategy will certainly draw a lot of people, especially because almost every week something new appears in LittleBigPlanet. Whether it is holiday-themed content or the Metal Gear Solid pack, a lot of new features are constantly added, and let's not forget that users can create their own levels and share them with others via the PlayStation Network.

Since the game still managed to register some good sales, as with any new IP in recent years, the possibility of it becoming a franchise and spawning sequels has been brought into discussion. But such a thing isn't very feasible, plus, the development team won't really agree to that, says Alex Evans, one of the executives from Media Molecule. He talked about the possibility of a sequel but stressed the fact that it might be a spiritual sequel, though it wouldn't be named like one.

“When I told people we're not going to do a sequel, they thought that we were lowering our support for it. A new way of answering that question is that we're putting all the creative ambition of a sequel in, but we might not end up calling it a sequel. We've got a really picky team of brilliant primadonnas, so to motivate them we've got to be doing something completely amazing, otherwise they'd all get bored. And so it's not just for the outside world, but for that lot.”

It seems that Media Molecule will certainly work on other projects, but a true sequel to LBP is highly unlikely. How do you feel about it? Should LBP receive a sequel, or is it fine just the way it is right now, with content and levels being delivered at regular intervals?
