Little Big Planet 2, the PlayStation 3 exclusive platformer from Sony, has managed to take first place in the United Kingdom video games chart in the week that it launched, the first title launched this year which manages to do so.

Little Big Planet 2 has been developed by Media Molecule and uses the same basic structure as the first title in the series, allowing the players to both play a lot of developer made levels and then jump into the powerful editor to create their own experiences.

Call of Duty: Black Ops, the first person shooter that has dominated sales during 2010, is still performing well and stays in second place for the week, with a bounce almost inevitable when the First Strike map pack is launched by Activision at the beginning of February.

Just Dance 2 is in third place, with Ubisoft, also taking fifth place in the video game chart with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, which managed to get up two places from seventh.

In fourth place EA Sports has FIFA 11, which went down two spots from second during the previous week, while Wii Fit Plus is in sixth, down from fourth, perfect proof that the fitness-based resolutions of the New Year do not manage to capture the attention of gamers for too long.

Mass Effect 2 from Electronic Arts is back in the top ten nearly one full year after it was initially launched, thanks to the newly released PlayStation 3 version of the game, which comes complete with an interactive comic book detailing the events of the first game.

Kinect Sports from Microsoft and Rare is in eighth place, with its performance closely linked to the good days enjoyed by the Kinect motion tracking system for the Xbox 360.

The ninth place goes to Gran Turismo 5 from Sony and Polyphony Digital, which managed to perform better than its racing rival, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit from Criterion.
