Lite-On Digital Solutions and Philips formed sometime ago a joint venture named PLDS, aimed at designing and manufacturing high quality computer hardware parts and especially optical storage devices. As the entire line of PLDS designed and manufactured DVD writer units received the Red Dot award earlier this year, the companies decided that a complete rework of its product range is in order, so the new and improved DX-20A3P optical storage unit is set to hit the market soon.

The Lite-On powered optical disc drive is aimed at providing users with a portable and easy to use DVD writer that comes with a stylish black and white external casing while offering high DVD burning speeds and a more compact design. Also, unlike most present day external DVD burning optical units, the DX-20A3P also comes with an integrated stand that allows it to be placed vertically, in order to save even more space.

As the drive will most likely be used in conjunction with portable computing systems like laptops and notebooks, the new Lite-On DVD burner also integrates a power switch that allows users to safely power it down in order to save energy and prolong battery life. Just like all other Lite-On 20X DVD writers, this new drive comes with the integrated SmartWrite technology that allows the units to burn DVD discs at higher than normally supported speeds.

Apart from the overspeeding feature, this patented Lite-On technology also increases the quality of the recording done on low quality optical discs as it optimizes the writing strategy on unknown media brands.

The new Lite-On external DVD burning optical drive, DX-20A3P, will hit the retail channel stores and resellers in Europe sometime during the next month, but the pricing scheme for this device is not yet known and right now it is only supported by Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP operating systems.
