Despite the fact that Linux is hot in North America right now, the employees of Linux organizations are not immune to layoffs, lots of them being fired from their current positions.

OSDL (Open Source Development Labs), something like the "center of the earth" in Linux development, fired employees from the sales, marketing business development and programming departments.

The reason for these changes is not related to financial issues, OSDL having no problems in that area, on the contrary, Linux is being adopted by an increasing number of end-users and corporate users. These layoffs are motivated by a much higher demand on other segments of the market, the company trying in this way to balance the workforce.

The new priorities of the organization include establishing offices in Europe and penetrating the Asian area, especially China and Korea, which will be prospected from already existing offices from Japan, announces Nelson Pratt, director of marketing.

The nonprofit organization doesn't give up on the programming efforts, considering that it has in its ranks, people like: Linus Torvalds, the very creator of Linux, Andrew Morton and Chris Wright, in charge of the security components of the system.

OSDL's domains include strategies for optimizing Linux according to the feedback received from system retailers and users. The main clients are: high-end server, telecommunication equipments and desktop users.
