The final version of Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 Cinnamon has been announced by Clement Lefebvre, the leader of the Linux Mint project and is now available for download.

The Linux Mint project has two different editions of the operating system, one based on Ubuntu and the other one based on Debian. Also, they both feature the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments, you might say that they are relatively the same.

In fact, if you choose a random background that doesn't betray the Debian or Ubuntu legacy, it would be difficult to tell them apart at first glance. As it stands right now, the version based on Ubuntu is much more popular, and it can be considered the main one in the project. That doesn't stop the developers from pursuing the Debian edition and updating it regularly.

The stable version of LMDE 2 “Betsy” Cinnamon is finally here

As you can imagine, the differences from one version to another are not all that big, and that can be easily seen in the screenshots posted below. In any case, because it's based on Debian and not Ubuntu 14.04, it does come with newer packages, and it should be a little bit faster.

"There are no point releases in LMDE 2, except for bug fixes and security fixes base packages stay the same, but Mint and desktop components are updated continuously. When ready, newly developed features get directly into LMDE 2, whereas they are staged for inclusion on the next upcoming Linux Mint 17.x point release. Consequently, Linux Mint users only run new features when a new point release comes out and they opt-in to upgrade to it," said Clement Lefebvre on the official blog.
