14 DAY TRIAL // The Linux Mint developers have revealed that the first Release Candidate for the 17.1 "Rebecca" branch will arrive in a couple of days and users will be able to test it.
The Mint devs have been working very hard on the upgrade for Linux Mint and it really shows. It will feature the latest Cinnamon 2.4, which packs a ton of improvements, but it will also come with some of its own changes. In any case, from what the developers have revealed until now, it's likely that very few people will choose not to upgrade to the new release.
In fact, some users might say that there are enough changes for a brand new release, not just a simple point update. We have to keep in mind that most of the updates released so far for Linux Mint have been rather consistent, so this new one is not all that surprising.
Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" RC is around the corner
This particular version has been in the works for some time and it's not really unexpected. In fact, the project leader detailed on a few occasions some of the features to be integrated, and the community seems thrilled by the modifications.
"The Cinnamon and MATE editions of Linux Mint 17.1 ‘Rebecca’ passed quality testing and were approved for an RC release. They should become available at the end of this week. The MATE edition sports out of the box support for the Compiz window-manager (which comes pre-installed, pre-configured and which you can switch to with a click of a button)."
"The Cinnamon edition features the new Cinnamon 2.4 desktop which features were announced on Segfault and which an early version of was made available as a preview in the Romeo section of the Linux Mint 17 repository. All 17.1 editions (including upcoming KDE and Xfce editions) also feature a huge number of improvements on tools, system layers, artwork and other aspects which they have in common," wrote Clem Lefebvre, the leader of the Linux Mint project.
Some of the new features already announced for Linux Mint 17.1 include a better update manager, the ability to bookmark folders in a different sidebar section, the ability to change the login screen design, background slideshows, and some new themes besides the green one. These are just a few features and more are sure to come.
