Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, United States, the Hewlett-Packard (HP for short) company is a famous name in the fields of computing, printing and digital imaging and also provides software and services. HP is also the No. 1 ranking company in worldwide personal computer shipments, surpassing Dell according to the Gartner and IDC market research companies' reports for October 2006.

One of the projects that HP considers developing somewhere soon is a "next generation datacenter". Sounds interesting, but what's even more interesting about this project is that HP relies on Linux and the open source community for accomplishing such a task. That's what Ann Livermore, executive vice president of the Technology Solutions Group within HP, said at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo during the famous LinuxWorld convention that took place this year in San Francisco, California.

"We believe there is a tremendous need for contributions from the open source community combined with the technology and innovation of companies like HP.", added Ann Livermore.

Ann said Linux has become a very good choice regarding servers, HP itself delivering one Linux-based server every minute for nine years. According to her the customers are very excited about Linux OS due to its very good features and functionalities. She takes as example the energy efficiency which is well reflected by the new functionality added to Linux that is able to put the system into low-power states when the computer is not working.

David Ames, IT manager for the Linux Foundation (where HP is also member), the news is more than great. If ten years ago no such company was interested in marketing something based on Linux, now HP proves again that times have changed and big names on the IT market such as Dell, Intel, IBM, more recently Lenovo and others are adding more and more Linux-based products in their offers.

"It's nice to see that Linux is an enterprise-class system, that people are embracing it, and that it generates this kind of money flow. It's an amazing thing ?", also added David Ames.
