Were one to sum up Katy Perry’s climb to international stardom, one could say that she kissed a girl, liked it, put the experience in lyrics and on music, and she had it made. Yet, as Katy’s interview with Paper Magazine reveals, her struggle to break in the charts was more complicated than that, which is why the only option she has now is to work lest she loses everything.

“There are about five hundred other girls who are trying to and dying to be in my position – I can’t take anything for granted. It’s all about work – it has to be.” the 24-year-old songbird tells the mag.

Since she’s worked so hard to make herself noticed, Katy is more than aware of the big lucky break she’s been given, and consequently does not plan to lose it by not doing anything. Especially since she is all too familiar with the concept of having everything and then losing it.

“I remember living in Beverly Hills and having a new black Jetta, being very comfortable on my monthly stipend, and my cousin looked at me and said, ‘Katy, this can go away,’ and I was like, ‘It’s never going to go away!’ And then it all went away. I remember that moment so clearly.” Katy says of what she thought was her first lucky break. In just an instant, she was dropped by two labels consecutively, had material for almost three albums that no one wanted to listen, and implicitly buy, and no one would believe she was really a singer.

“I would write a check for my rent with fifteen dollars in my bank account and on the memo I would write, ‘God, please help.’ I would not recommend that anybody do that. I would tell people, you know, ‘I’m going to have a record out,’ but after three years, after being dropped by two labels, people were like, ‘You’re not going to have a record out, you’re a liar and what do you really do?” Katy recalls of her constant struggle to achieve recognition in the music industry.

Granted, she’s not the only artist to have had a rough beginning in the industry but, of the lot, she is among the few to have kept their head on their shoulders, it has often been said. Katy, what with her fame and the public simply adoring her, is still a sweet girl who simply loves what she does, and who would probably continue to make music even if, hypothetically speaking, people stopped buying her records as early as tomorrow, as the rest of the interview with Paper Magazine reveals.
