Libranet discontinued!

Six months ago, Libranet's founder Tal Danzig, has announced that the company is restructuring, after the death of Jon Danzig who died of cancer last year, during which they will not be taking new orders and the development of Libranet will suffer also. Tal Danzig, the son and partner of Jon Danzig and now Libranet's owner and chief developer, has announced that he is discontinuing the development of Libranet.

Tal Danzig says: "I realize it's been a long while since I've posted here. My life has changed a lot since I last posted here (my blog has some clues for the curious), and the time passed between my last communications and now has given me a chance to find a solution for Libranet that works for me. Unfortunately, that solution is not to continue with Libranet. I'm not in the position in my life or career where running Libranet would make sense. I hope that the Libranet community can understand and respect this decision. It has not been an easy process reaching this point, but I finally feel like I have the perspective to make the choice that will work for me.

I strongly believe that Libranet is/was a great product, and that Libranet 3.0 was the strongest release of the line. That Libranet achieved strong leaps through each major release was a point of pride for me, and is a testament not just to the Libranet vision, but to the power of the open source and free software movements. Jon Danzig was a man with vision and insight into the computing industry, and with the Libranet project I know that he felt that he was trying to create the best possible computer system available. I can only hope that the work achieved will have some sort of lasting impact; a tribute to my father and to the work that he and I did together. My dad was a dreamer, and Libranet was a piece of his dreams turned to reality. He and I had many late nights thinking sessions together pondering on the ins and outs of the computer business, something that I will never forget.

There still seems to be a demand for the Libranet forum, so I will try and keep that going for the moment. My biggest concerns with this for the moment are keeping the forums spam free and the monthly costs associated with hosting the libranet.com website. The former can be taken care of with the addition of some forum moderators; the latter will need some more thought.

Working on Libranet has been a major part of my life these past 7 years (yes, it's almost a full 7 years since Jon and I first started work on Libranet). It has been a learning process, it's been many many hours of time spent in front of the computer and many more of "thinking time". I remember the joy of the first sale, the pride of going through an install of the final build of Libranet 3.0. I remember the support that I have gotten from the Libranet community during this difficult past year since Jon's death, it has meant a lot to me. Thank you all for your support and understanding."

Libranet was one of the oldest surviving Debian-derived distributions. First released in 1999, it developed a loyal following because of its easy installation and comprehensive set of packages.
