An ingenious citizen using an illegal device to change traffic lights

Are you pissed off by traffic? Would you like to always encounter only the green light? A man from Longmont Colorado has found a solution: You just have to go to EBay and buy a device called Opticon and when you approach a traffic light the device signals it to change to green. This is the type of device firefighters use in case of an emergency.

As you might have guessed the use of such a device is illegal. After two years police has finally caught Jason Niccum and fined him 50 dollars for "suspicion of interfering with a traffic signal". Niccum excused himself by saying: "I'm always late".

Niccum was caught by the city traffic engineers who noticed a pattern of periodic disruptions on certain intersections. When they filmed those intersections they found that no firefighters' car or ambulance was passing by when the traffic light changed. After five days of filming they managed to observe that a white Ford pickup was passing each time (see video).

"It's not only that he was beating the system, what he was really doing is he was impacting the other citizens of Longmont and the other people trying to get to work just like he was," police said.

City traffic engineer Joe Olson said traffic engineers plan to update the city's Opticon system this year to block unauthorized light-changing signals.
