It will be interesting to see if educational institutions will choose to work with Ubuntu

Lenovo’s latest ThinkPad X140e is set to ship out soon, and when it does, it will be available with either Windows 8 or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS software.

This is a roughed laptop, designed to protect the precious insides pumping life into the machine. With this purpose in mind, Lenovo has slipped in an accelerometer capable of detecting brusque movements (like falling.) When that happens, the sensors can proceed to shut the rubber-coated hard drive to prevent any damage to it.

Also if you spill a cup of coffee on it, it’s not the end of the world, as Lenovo has added a spill-resistant keyboard with this model. This feature might come quite in handy, especially since this laptop is supposedly targeted at the educational sector. The battery should provide up to 8.5 hours of life-force.

According to the listing on Ubuntu.com the laptop is supposed to feature an AMD A4-500 0 processor with Radeon HD Graphics. On top of that, users are going to find Wi-Fi, VGA ports, HDMI out, Ethernet plus 2 USB 3.0 ports and a USB 2.0 port.

Even if the Lenovo official website makes no mention of Ubuntu, the above mentioned site states the following.

“The Lenovo ThinkPad X140e notebook with components described below has been awarded the status of Enabled for Ubuntu.”

“The system is available in some regions with a special image of Ubuntu pre-installed by the manufacturer. It takes advantage of the hardware features for this system and may include additional software. You should check when buying the system whether this is an option.”

The laptop also proves to be quite easy to be carried around, weighing just 3.9 pounds / 1.7 kg so students of any ages shouldn't have any problem in this department.

What about the pricing? Lenovo doesn't specify anything about it and users asking this question on the website are invited to come back later to check if the price has been added.
