The company believes that the ThinkPad should be turned into something more

Lenovo will be one of the primary promoters of the Windows 8 operating system, but it won't just be betting on tablets, even though it will definitely do its bets in that area.

What the company will really try to do is reimagine the ThinkPad line of notebooks and, in the words of chief designer Arimasa Naitoh, “keep breaking that barrier, to bring the ThinkPad to the next stage.”

“I’m not saying the ThinkPad clamshell will be replaced. I never think that. But in addition to that, we need to create something more,” Naitoh added.

The implication is that, with Windows 8 and ARM now in the field, normal clamshell devices might not be enough, both on the consumer and the business front.

Unfortunately, we don't have any specifics as to what this direction will lead to.
