Some probably saw it coming when Lenovo took Acer's place as third greatest PC supplier, but Lenovo dispelled all doubt now, ousting Dell from second place and becoming HP's newest big rival on the PC front.

Of course, this might not last for long, for reasons not exactly similar to those that catapulted Lenovo to the second spot in the top worldwide PC suppliers' list.

Basically, if HP does end up spinning off its PC business, it might do most of Lenovo's work for it.

Setting that aside, though, IDC (and Gartner) reported that Dell lost its place as second greatest supplier after Lenovo shipped over 12 million units during the latest quarter (July-September, Q3 of 2011).

“Lenovo has captured incredible marketplace momentum to surpass two competitors to capture the #2 spot in worldwide PCs over the span of just two quarters,” said Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang.

“This is the highest rank Lenovo has achieved in worldwide PC sales and, given the current competitive environment, positions the company as a strong challenger to ultimately become the global market leader.”

After shipping the 12.6 million units, give or take (a record quarterly level), it ended up with a share of 13.7%.

This is the fifth quarter of continuous marketing growth and practically makes it the fastest to improve so much in such a short time among all top vendors.

Needless to say, Lenovo doesn't plan to stop here, its only target being up, as far as sales and revenue levels go at least.

“We will continue to invest in innovative products that will help drive the convergence of technologies and services across all four screens – smart phones, tablets, PCs and smart TV. We must deliver a great user experience across all platforms to achieve our goal and become the leading personal technology company in the world.”
