The low-tech solution

If you are an Xbox 360 owner, you probably know that it is one of the loudest machines out there. I know that some of you consider it spectacular, considering its high-definition visuals and the fact that you can actually find one in stores.

The number of Xbox 360 titles available is quite impressive not to mention the wide range of options you have once you log on to Xbox Live Marketplace. But all of this fades once you turn on your machine and pop a DVD in. Have you ever heard a plane take-off? The sound of an Xbox 360 reading a DVD is quite similar.

If you are bothered by this, ExtremeTech has the solution. They posted on their website the "perfect" way to quiet your 360. It involves opening it up and getting right in the guts of the machine (if you want to lose your warranty that is).

This "mod" for quieting your Xbox doesn't involve any firmware hacking so if you were worrying that it will be detected via Xbox Live as a hack, don't! Let's get on with the procedure. First open your console and remove your hard drive. After that snap off the face plate, bla bla bla. What is important is that you need to get to remove your optical unit and slide some rubber washers or grommets on the optical unit's screws resting on your motherboard.

The rubber will reduce vibration and will also protect your motherboard. You also have to cover your console's components with a sound-dampening material called Dynamat. This solution is not that high-tech but it is worth a go. If you want to see the whole process and learn how to do it you can click here.
