Brings Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard to the phone

Wireless carrier Verizon seems set to offer some of its users the possibility to enhance their experience when it comes to the mobile phone they own. The operator is currently working on an official Windows Mobile 6.5 update for the HTC Ozone it has launched a few months ago, at least this is what a leaked ROM with the update suggests.

As it happens almost all the time with these leaked ROMs and builds of Microsoft's mobile operating system, the news on the leaked update comes from the XDA-Developers forums, where one member has posted the shipping upgrade ROM for the Ozone (v2.16.605.15). The Verizon HTC Ozone, or the HTC Snap, as the handset has been released on the market around the world, has been said before to be on its way to receive an update to the latest version of the platform, and now the guys over at WMExperts caught this leak into the wild.

Here's what they have to say about it: “Running WM6.5 build 21845 and with about 67MB of RAM/64MB ROM, it sure seems zippy enough when we loaded it up on our phone. Overall, it looks exactly the same as the WM6.1 version, but it does have some little graphic enhancements (Outlook), is snappy as all heck, has MyPhone/Marketplace and even features a new home-screen customizer (see below) which is quite nice. The customizer allows you to enable/disable panels and even move them up/down to your liking.”

A great deal of other novelties and enhancements are also present with the ROM upgrade, and those familiar with WM 6.5 might already know about them: improved battery life, new kernel, better performance levels, enhanced Exchange support, and other more. The upgrade will only deliver the Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard flavor of the platform, a little downgraded from the Professional version, yet it still sounds like a nice improvement, one should agree.

For the time being, the upgrade hasn't been officially unveiled, so those willing to give it a try should take all the necessary precautions before installing it to make sure that they won't render the device useless. It shouldn't bee too long before Verizon announces it officially, so one might consider waiting for that announcement to taste Windows Mobile 6.5 on Ozone. Additional details on the leaked ROM are available at WMExperts.
