Leaks from a chemical plant in central China are responsible for the death of thousands of fish inhabiting the country's Fuhe River.

Local authorities say that, up until now, they have collected some 220,000 pounds (99,790 kilograms) of dead fish. Odds are they'll collect some more in the days to come.

“The dead fish covered the entire river and looked like snowflakes,” a local fisherman reportedly told the press.

Researchers were called at the scene, and asked to analyze water samples. They found that ammonia density in the part of the Fuhe River that was near to the chemical plant exceeded national standards.

Specialists working with the local environmental department have warned people not to eat this fish, or risk developing various medical complications.

However, they say that local drinking water sources have not been contaminated.
