Developer Riot Games has issued a patch introducing the new Champion Mastery progression system for League of Legends, allowing players to gain various perks based on their performance.

League of Legends is the most popular multiplayer online battle arena title in the world, enjoyed by over 50 million users each month, pitting two teams of five Champions each against each other on a symmetrical map.

Riot Games has been experimenting with various experience-enhancing mechanics over the years, and now the Champion Mastery system will enable users to gain points and ranks for their champions, based on how well their team did in the last match played.

Whenever players rank up with a Champion, they can get various types of rewards, from titles and badges to new in-game emotes for their characters.

The system has been undergoing testing for quite some time, and now it's finally ready to hit the high seas.

Everyone likes getting good grades, but will they?

Since the days of testing, a number of changes have been implemented, including player tooltips, indicating the sum of your Champion Mastery level across all in-game Champions, as well as an icon that shows whether or not a certain queue grants Champion Mastery points for matches.

Furthermore, the official announcement also reveals that end-of-game Champion Mastery animations now have sound effects, and Champions gain their titles based on their primary role while gaining levels.

The titles are displayed on hover, in your Profile and Champions tab, and at the Champion Master results display at the end of a game.

Some people are worried that the grading system might not accurately reflect the actions players performed during a game, and might lead to many people getting bad scores, which could trigger an even higher degree of toxicity from some of the already unfriendly members of the community.
