The plant is to shut down in May 2017, owner Dominion Resources, Inc. says

Energy company Dominion Resources, Inc. has announced plans to pull the plug on a coal-fired power plant it owns and operates close to the town of Somerset in Massachusetts.

Think Progress tells us that, apart from being the largest plant of its kind in New England, the Brayton Point Power Station also happens to be the second-biggest carbon dioxide emitter in Massachusetts.

Thus, in 2011 alone, the facility released some 3.26 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions into our planet's atmosphere.

The plant is expected to quit generating power and feeding it into the national grid in May 2017.

Information shared with the public says that, when taking the decision to shut down this facility, Dominion Resources, Inc. chiefly took into consideration financial issues.

Thus, it appears that, due to the natural gas boom, this plant would have eventually stopped making any profits.

Besides, the company would have had to invest quite a lot of money to make sure that the facilities' four units complied with the carbon emission rules that have recently been released by the country's Environmental Protection Agency.
