Rise of the Tomb Raider is the coming major video game in the long-running franchise powered by the charisma of Lara Croft, and it seems that, when the title launches, fans will be able to also enjoy an entirely new and original live-action mini-series which will detail some of her adventures.

The information comes from the Instagram account of Stephen Lunsford, who is both an actor and a producer.

Update: The post has since been removed by the director.

He explains that he will create the live-action series but he is not ready to offer any details on the story that it will tell or the actors that he has in mind for the various roles.

The announcement states, "This will act as a prequel to the game and eventual movie. We are currently in pre-production and working hard to make sure this becomes the best live-action iteration of Lara Croft yet. Thank you to Crystal Dynamics for all of your support and I can't wait to make this a reality. I will have updates as the project progresses."

Lunsford has a relatively limited career but he does have a solid fan base and he has experience with production and direction after he created parodies of a number of high-profile modern movie releases, including "Twilight" and "The Hangover."

It's unclear how he was chosen to create a mini-series based on Tomb Raider and how involved the team at Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix will be in its development.

Much of the success of the live-action release will be linked to the story that it will tell and the actress who is chosen to play Lara Croft.

Camilla Luddington is surely a popular choice among fans and this would mean that a link between the series and the video game is created.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is an Xbox One exclusive at the moment

Microsoft has managed to surprise plenty of gamers when announcing that Rise of the Tomb Raider is now an Xbox One exclusive, which means that fans of the franchise might have to buy a new console to play it.

The game is set to continue the story of the new incarnation of Lara Croft and will use the same gritty style, with more focus on the emotions of the character and the way her newfound skills are affecting her in the long term.

At the moment, launch is set to take place in the fall of next year.
