A laptop that contained social security numbers of customers was stolen from Maloney Proprieties. The data was needed to ensure eligibility for federal and state housing subsidies.

According to a letter posted on the US Attorney General's website, the company sent a notice to each one of the clients that might be affected, reassuring them that the chances for the information to be used for illegal purposes are slim.

They advise those involved to closely monitor their bank accounts to make sure they won't fall victims to any identity theft attempts.

This might not be so uncommon, as lately we've seen a lot of such incidents. However, the company should be applauded for taking the necessary measures and most of all, they should be applauded for the fact that all the information on the laptop was encrypted.

Others who find themselves in similar situations should follow the example set by Maloney Proprieties.
