When Lady Gaga released the “Born This Way” single, Madonna fans immediately noticed some similarity to their idol’s “Express Yourself” hit, a similarity on which Madge herself commented later, even including in her shows a medley of the two to highlight it.

As it turns out, this was probably Gaga’s intention from the start, as she hints in a new interview with Attitude magazine.

“I have to be really honest, I was completely kind of floored that Madonna was singing my song on her stage every night! I’m certainly not thinking about anybody but me and my fans when I’m on stage. The fact that I was on her mind at all. I mean, Madonna’s… she’s Madonna,” Gaga says.

She adds that she never really cared about what people were saying about her and Madonna’s songs until she heard the two were being played in concert by Madonna herself. At that point, she didn’t even care that she was accused of ripping off the Queen of Pop.

“All it meant to me was that Madonna Ciccone was singing my song on her stage and I’m 27! And as a punk-rocker from New York, I’ve basically been hoping that I would become so good that one day I would [expletive] off Madonna!” Gaga muses.

If she really planned this, she’s a genius because, even though Madonna spoke in less than flattering terms about the similarity between the songs and what that meant for Gaga as an artist, Gaga still won.
