A-listers take to the red carpet to dazzle at the gala

The GQ Men of the Year 2009 Awards gala was held last night at The Royal Opera House in London, England, and, while a celebration of male accomplishment in several fields, including showbiz, television and politics, it was the ladies who stole the thunder on the red carpet. As limousines started pulling up in front of the venue, the biggest female stars of the moment took to the red carpet to dazzle the media and fans with their choice of outfits for the evening.

Actress Eva Mendes, who was just recently in Italy, at the Venice Film Festival, promoting her latest film, “The Bad Lieutenant,” brought true Hollywood glamor to the event. Decked in a floor-length, purple gown that also had a sparkly, long trail, the actress was one of the few women to choose what one may call a “formal” outfit for the event. Not that it lacked the wow factor or anything, it is being said, since the gown was made with bits of sheer fabric that allowed a glimpse of Mendes’ leg and thigh when the blitzes of the cameras went off.

“Slumdog Millionaire” and by-now established stunner Freida Pinto went for classic black in a little, cut-out number, again made of sheer fabric. The star chose to pair the somewhat asymmetrical dress with gladiator-style, black pumps and, surprisingly enough, no accessory whatsoever. Glamor model Kelly Brook was, on the other hand, the exact opposite of that. The British star donned a very playful, figure-hugging, pink frock that perfectly complemented her extremely famous curves.

Before presenting Michael McIntyre with the Comedian of the Year trophy, Brook posed on the red carpet, impressing even her most bitter critics with her impeccable outfit. The leaf-patterned, baby pink dress, which was so tight it almost made it seem it was impossible for her to walk properly (this was not the case, though), went perfectly with a pair of open-toe, leopard-printed pumps and a backcombed ‘do.

Singer Lily Allen also cut an impressive appearance, as she chose to tone down her colorful personality with an all-black gown. However, there was a twist to it, as the bottom half was again sheer, showing underneath nothing but a black leotard and sky-high black heels. She accessorized with heavy dark makeup and long, black hair extensions, for a mock impression of Morticia Adams of the Adams Family, as several British media outlets have called it.

If Allen went for a goth-inspired look, Elizabeth Hurley, oppositely, went for summery and light. Usually wearing thigh-slit, floor-length dresses, the star now chose a sky blue, strapless creation that she matched with strappy sandals for a more summery feel. Blue eyeshadow and a silver clutch completed her light, yet, at the same time, extremely elegant and sophisticated outfit.
