The need for increased storage solutions has enabled LaCie to work on updating its line of external drives with a new solution that can provide its customers with a capacity of as much as 1TB. The company has just announced the latest addition to its line of rugged portable hard drives, designed by Neil Poulton, with the introduction of the Rugged XL. This new drive has been designed to provide users with enough storage capacity to enable them to back up their most important digital content and store large media files, such as HD movies.

“Since the launch of the original Rugged drive, users have shared stories of admiration for the robust materials, functionality and design of the Rugged family of hard drives,” said Lise Manteau, Desktop Hard Disk product manager. “It was a natural progression to expand the Rugged family and offer customers the same durability and style in a solution suited for safeguarding data in the desktop environment.”

With the storage market currently joggling between the increased capacity delivered by traditional hard drives and better performance enabled by Flash-based Solid State Drives, the new LaCie Rugged XL external drive makes a statement for the first category. The drive is designed to provide computer users with a considerable amount of storage space that can be easily accessed through two key interfaces, high-speed USB and extreme speed eSATA 3GB/s. This feature enables the Rugged XL drive to be compatible with both PC and Mac systems.

In addition to a unique design and an increased storage capacity, the Rugged XL drives will be available with the LaCie Setup Assistant and the Genie Backup Assistant software application for Windows users and the Intego Backup Assistant for Mac users. Price wise, LaCie announced that the 1TB Rugged XL drive would be available through the LaCie Online Store, LaCie Reseller+ or LaCie Storage Partner with a starting price tag of $159.99.
