LXDE eXtra Luxury Edition 14.04, a remastered version of Lubuntu designed for older computers, has been released and is now available for download.

LXLE, or LXDE eXtra Luxury Edition, is a distribution that is usually based only on the LTS (long term support) releases of Lubuntu, which means that this particular operating system gets updated every couple of years.

It took the developer a while to make all the adjustments to his Lubuntu spin, but the final version of LXLE has arrived and comes with a ton of modifications. So many things have been changed, in fact, that it will be hard to recognize the new OS.

“First I would like to say that this release would not have been possible without the excellent user community effort that arrived to help by lending their time and knowledge, after the very bumpy beta debut. Thanks to all of you. Team members also deserve recognition for tolerating difficulties with the beta and internal frustrations that needed to be addressed. Kudos,” said the dev in the official announcement.

One of the most interesting changes made in this LXLE release is the new name that was adopted for the distribution. LXLE used to stand for Lubuntu Extra Life Extension, but the developer felt that it no longer represented the actual content.

The new version of LXLE comes with almost identical releases for the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, and that includes features, updated software and system components.

According to the changelog, PCManFM now has a few interesting improvements. Users will be able to open directories and text as root, create shortcuts, modify base icon names, copy to folder, right click desktop trash to empty, and much more.

Also, Launch (Fehlstart), Run (Gexec), and Terminal (RoxTerm) have hotkeys enabled to open them using the keyboard for faster access, a number of new applications have been added, some of the old ones have been updated, File Roller has been replaced with xArchiver, Gpicview has been replaced by Mirage, Bittorrent Sync has replaced Ubuntu One, Gitso has been included to provide better remote support, Flush has been replaced by Transmission, and much more.

The developer also explained that the desktop paradigms have been updated and users will be able to emulate the look of XP, Gnome 2, OS X, Unity and Netbook.
