Companies are always eager to brag about what their products or technologies achieved, so it is not all that unexpected to see LG's glee at having had its 3D technology used at the 26th Film Independent Spirit Awards.

As end-users may or may not know, 3D technology finally managed to kick off last year, to some extent.

Cinemas started to show more and more 3D movies, while monitors and TVs began to use 120Hz panels. Meanwhile, 3D content, like movies and even entire TV channels, became available.

With this growing popularity, IT players began to devise new 3D technologies, and LG just saw its own solution enjoyed by Hollywood celebrities at the 26th Film Independent Spirit Awards.

A specially-produced, short film that lasted two minutes was viewed by over 1,400 attendees on LG Cinema 3D HDTVs (they were positioned on stage or around the venue itself).

LG cinema is based on the Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) display technology, which optimizes the image separation for the right and left eyes. When recombined via the glasses, the 3D images have lower cross-talk.

There is also the benefit of Light Boost, a thin film that, when placed over the screen, enhances the 3D image brightness.

All in all, the technology is similar to the one used in movie theaters and comes with the advantage of reasonably-priced glasses.

"The Film Independent Spirit Awards honor the next generation of visionary filmmakers making this the perfect venue to launch our next generation 3D technology," said Wayne Park, president and CEO, LG Electronics USA, Inc.

"LG Cinema 3D is preferred three-to-one by consumers because it delivers a much more comfortable and pleasing 3D experience, which is important to movie enthusiasts. And, as we bring 3D technology into the mainstream, LG is proud to join forces with Film Independent and Project:Involve to educate independent filmmakers about this exciting new technology."
