South Korean mobile-phone maker LG Electronics announced today that its LG Pop (LG GD510) handset had been sold in more than one million units since its official launch. According to the company, it managed to reach the milestone only 100 days after the phone's European and CIS launch in October 2009. The handset is now available for purchase all around the world, the company states, adding that the fast-selling LG Pop seems set to become one of the most popular models it has delivered to the market.

The LG Pop sports a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen display that is framed by a super-slim, 4.8 mm bezel, and LG says that it has become increasingly popular among mobile-phone users looking for a device that can offer a wide range of features inside a compact design. Among the capabilities of the device, we can count access to social-networking sites directly from the homescreen, enabling users to easily update their status on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter while on the go.

“From the start we based the LG Pop on customer needs, leading us to create a compact and intuitive touchscreen phone that wasn’t weighed down by useless features,” Dr. Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said. “LG Pop offers most of the benefits of a smartphone without the steep learning curve. There’s still a huge market out there for phones that do everything right out of the box.”

The South Korean handset vendor also stated that, “LG Pop has won plaudits for its innovative use of green technology.” The phone comes with an optional solar battery cover, enabling users to gain two minutes of talk time for each ten minutes during which the handset has been in sun light. The device also comes with Eco-tree and Eco-calculator applications, so that users can calculate the amount of CO2 that has been cut through charging it from the sun.

Moreover, LG also states that two new phone colors, aqua blue and lime, are to be added to the existing palette starting with the next month. “In addition to its cheerful name, the LG Pop debuted with a new user interface that included quirky icons and a bright color scheme. Changeable rear covers (available in most regions) added to the phone’s list of customizable features. Where offered, covers are available in fluorescent shades of pink, green and orange, peanut-patterned black and silver, an XO pattern and glossy white,” the company also noted.
