Mobile phone manufacturer LG has developed a new chip that is capable of receiving digital multimedia broadcasting or DMB mobile TV signals.

LG has a lot of experience when it comes to including DMB capabilities in its handsets and this new chip is the latest improvement they are bringing for mobile TV-enabled phones.

The new chip enables users to watch real-time TV programs for 4 hours, which is significantly better than the 3 hours the existing chips provided. Mainly what the chip promises is low power consumption, which is why the viewing time is also extended.

Apparently, it consumes 150 megawatts of power, 40 percent less than the company's current 250 megawatts chips. According to LG, its new chip will also enhance the mobile TV's signal receiving rate in shadow areas (where broadcasting signals lack reception) by 30 percent therefore users will have a clearer TV viewing experience on the go.

The picture-in-picture technology is also included and users will be able to view two different channels simultaneously on a single mobile phone's screen, although this doesn't seem to be very useful on most of today's mobile phones that include a screen that's too small for actually enjoying two channels at the same time.

On the other hand, the picture-in-picture technology might provide quite an enjoyable TV viewing experience on devices like the LG PM 80.

If topped with DMB-capable mobile phones, the chip will allow users to access real-time traffic information because of its support for transport protocol expert group (TPEG) technology.
