LG Electronics has recently announced the introduction of a new series of monitors based on the in-plane switching (IPS) technology, the IPS5, which promises to deliver accurate color reproduction and wide view angles.

This new series comes as the successor of the previous IPS1 and IPS6 display lineup, which have managed to achieve a good reputation among imaging professionals.

According to LG, monitors in the IPS5 range are factory calibrated to ensure that colors remain sharp and true and were also designed to maintain color temperatures at an optimum level of around 6,500K.

The company states that thanks to these advancements, its monitors deliver colors identical with those of the original image.

In addition to the high image quality, IPS5 series displays also feature a so called Dual Package software, which enables users to span the desktop on two monitors without requiring more than a single mouse click.

Sadly, LG hasn't provided us with any details regarding the response times of these new monitors.

IPS stands for In-Plane Switching and the technology was developed by Hitachi in 1996 to fix the main limitations faced by TN (twisted nematic) panels, which included small viewing angles and low-quality color reproduction.

The improved color reproduction is possible thanks to the eight bits per channel used for such panels, instead of the six bits used by their TN counterparts.

“We’re committed to continually improving all aspects of our monitors with the best technology currently available,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company.

“The IPS5 series is proof of that commitment, as these monitors deliver superbly accurate images with true color representation with a wide viewing angle for demanding professionals,” concluded the company's rep.

LG's IPS5 series computer monitors will become available later this months at an yet undisclosed price point. In November of 2011, LG will continue by introducing the IPS5P series of displays in Europe.
