The smartphone is expected to arrive in Europe in Q2 2012

We already reported yesterday on the upcoming LG Optimus 4X HD, but we thought the Korean handset maker will only unveil it at the Mobile World Congress 2012 exhibition, this weekend.

Given the fact that LG won't hold any major press events this year in Barcelona, it seemed more appropriate to officially introduce the device a few days earlier than MWC 2012, in order to get all the attention of the media, rather than splitting it with other major manufacturers who will certainly announce similar devices in only a few days.

If the device announced until today weren't impressive enough, the LG Optimus 4X HD will surely make headlines, at least for a day or so. This is a quad-core smartphone, as the name suggests.

The device packs NVIDIA's Tegra 3 chipset with a multi-core processors clocked at 1.5 GHz. This 4+1 architecture also includes a fifth low-power CPU (Companion Core), which is meant to handle standard tasks, like calls, emails or music playback, without draining the battery too much.

Hardware-wise, LG Optimus 4X HD boasts a large 4.7-inch True HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that supports HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution. On the inside, the smartphone packs 16GB of internal memory and 1GB of RAM.

Unfortunately, there's no mention of microSD card slot, NFC support or HSPA+. Instead the smartphone is confirmed to feature high-quality connection MHL (Mobile High Definition Link) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) support.

There's also an 8-megapixel camera on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and HD video recording, a secondary 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls, as well as a 2,150 mAh Li-Ion battery.

According to LG, the Optimus 4X HD will be delivered with Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system on board, so there will be no more waiting for the upgrade.

The good news is that LG promised that the Optimus 4X HD would be available in Europe in the second quarter. The bad news is that the phone has yet to be confirmed for North America. We initially thought that this will be released by T-Mobile USA as G4X, but both companies have yet to say anything about this.

Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
