Fingerprint scanners are bound to become yesterday’s news

Fingerprint reading authentication systems have been a feature of high-end smartphones, and we’ve seen a bunch of models grace the market this year, like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, boasting this technology.

But next year, fingerprint scanners might not be the stuff of premium models anymore. Actually, we told you not so long ago that Huawei was prepping a handset bundling such technology, which would arrive on the market for $161 / €146.

Future premium devices, on the other hand, will move towards another standard - iris scanning security. As a recent report coming out of G for Games suggests, Korean phone maker LG will probably be one of the first to implement such technology into its upcoming G5 flagship.

According to sources familiar with the matter, LG has been working hand in hand with biometrics firm Irience, which already has a completed hardware module that will be implemented into the said smartphone.

The company is currently in the midst of perfecting the system by increasing the detection range from 12 inch / 30 cm to 20 inch / 50 cm.

Is iris scanning authentication the next big thing?

While eye scanning technology might be a lot more safer than fingerprint authentication, which can be easily forged, it’s pretty amusing to imagine a scenario in which you’re trying to authorize payment in a crowded environment like a busy airport. You’d look pretty award trying to get your phone to iris scan you.

Even so, iris scanning technology seems to be in the cards for a lot of device makers. For example, Apple and Samsung have been known to work towards such a system for years. But their efforts have been beaten to the punch by Asian manufacturers like ZTE and Fujitsu.

Of Fujitsu’s new flagships, about the Arrows NX F-04G we have talked recently. The phone comes with a 5.2-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 810, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage like any other premium phone released in recent days.

The thing is, Fujitsu will only sell the phone in Japan, so it might be a while before the Western market gets to have a taste of such product. Interested parties will have to wait until 2016 at least, when LG is bound to launch the G5.
