LG’s first Android Wear watch is not far from being unveiled

A few months ago, after Google pulled the curtain off its dedicated wearable OS, Android Wear, LG also announced one of the first smartwatches that will be making use of the OS.

Motorola also has the Moto 360 in the pipe-line, which won everybody’s hearts instantly, due to its beautiful curvy design.

Anyway, the LG G Watch is also incoming and, as one source reported, the smartwatch will make an appearance in the UK before July with a price-tag of about $300 / €220.

And for those eagerly awaiting LG’s first Android Wear product, we thought we do a quick information round-up on the device, to remind you what it’s all about.

Visually, the upcoming LG G Watch is much more akin to the Samsung Gear 2, so it will probably be placed in direct competition with this particular smartwatch.

Despite not being far from the purported launching date, LG hasn’t shared many details about the device. Nevertheless, despite the manufacturer’s skittishness, the G Watch specs have found a way to make it online.

The most recent reports claim that the G Watch will arrive bundled with 3G connectivity, thus allowing users to place phone calls from their wrist. Funnily enough, that’s exactly the concept Samsung has been rumored to be working on now.

So the watch could be used as a standalone device, without having to connect the smartwatch to a smartphone. LG is familiar with the cellular capable watches, as the company launched the Watch Phone back in 2009, but the addition of such a feature on the G watch sure is puzzling.

The fact that the LG G Watch could be used independently goes against what Google said in an earlier post targeted at developers, where it noted that Android Wear is for notifications and not standalone applications.

We’re curious how LG has managed to jiggle the two concepts around and unify them into a single product.

Anyway, so far we know the LG G Watch will come equipped with a square 1.65-inch display. Although this information hasn't been confirmed yet, the LG G Watch seems to be almost identical in size with the Samsung Gear 2 Neo.

Moving on, the watch will come equipped with the “always-on” feature, but will not support standard microUSB recharging.

In the pictures we have seen so far, the watch is showcased featuring a proprietary five point charging mount, an aspect that reveals the watch will be needing a full charging dock to replenish.

The watch will be made available for sale in black and white (with a gold frame body). Both variants will be IP67 water and dust resistant and will be compatible with a “wide range of Android smartphones.”

Unlike Samsung, LG is not keeping its wearables in the family, allowing connectivity only with its products and that's a good thing!
