And to think that, once upon a time, they were just unassuming curiosities

Vendors of integrated circuits haven't been getting the same good business from PCs and general computing appliances, but fortunately they can count on other segments for orders.

Apparently, LED lighting will become really big in 2014, and of course later on too.

In fact, LED lighting might become as lucrative as tablet and smartphone ICs next year (IC stands for integrated circuit).

The names of companies like On-Bright Electronics, Macroblock, and Silergy might pop up from next year onwards, as could Richtek Technology, Global Mixed-mode Technology (GMT), and Leadtrend Technology.

MediaTek could, meanwhile, become a prime supplier as well.

It's all fortuitous really. With fossil fuel supply dwindling and energy efficiency so important now, LED can really help take the edge off, since they rely on so much less electrical power than incandescent light bulbs.
