U.S. Cellular customers can now purchase a new smartphone on the network of their wireless carrier, namely the waterproof, shock-proof Kyocera Hydro XTRM.

At the moment, the device is available only through the carrier’s website, but it is set to arrive on shelves via the company’s brick and mortar stores starting with May 24.

The new mobile phone features a price tag of $29.99 (€23.2) with the signing of a two-year contract agreement, while being priced at $299.99 (€232) contract free.

The handset offers not only increased durability when compared to other smartphones, but also provides users with support for the wireless carrier’s 4G LTE network.

“The 4G LTE Hydro XTRM has Military Standard 810G certification for shock and drops and carries IP57 certification for protection against dust and immersion in up to 3.28 feet of water for up to 30 minutes,” the carrier announced.

Kyocera Hydro XTRM arrives on shelves with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor packed inside, as well as with a 4-inch impact-resistant touchscreen display, and with Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system loaded on top.

Furthermore, the smartphone features a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, along with a 1.3MP front camera for making video calls, 4GB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

The specs list of this device also includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and Smart Sonic Receiver technology delivers call clarity in noisy environments.

“Whether you are on a family vacation near a water park or campground or your job takes you outdoors in more extreme conditions, the Hydro XTRM keeps you connected to the people and information you need,” said Edward Perez, vice president of sales and marketing operations for U.S. Cellular.

“At U.S. Cellular, we want to provide a better wireless experience, and our customers can rely on this phone to keep working through accidental drops, unexpected rain or harsh environments.”
