Following the release of Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), we are proud to announce the immediate availability for download of Kubuntu 12.10.

Kubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) is an operating system based on several different technologies, such as KDE Software, Plasma, Linux kernel, Debian, and Ubuntu.

The distribution shares a few similarities with Ubuntu 12.10, such as the same Linux kernel, 3.5.5, Python 3.2, an updated GNU Toolchain that contains GCC 4.7.2, eglibc 2.15, and gdb 7.5, not to mention OpenJDK7 as the default Java implementation.

Kubuntu is based on KDE SC, so it has nothing to do with the Unity desktop environment used in the regular version of Ubuntu. Therefore, no online searches are being made, either to Canonical services or Amazon.

Highlights of Kubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal):

• Plasma Workspaces include major improvements to the Dolphin File Manager, Konsole X Terminal Emulator, Activities, and the KWin Window Manager; • KDE Applications, including Okular, Kopete, KDE PIM, educational applications and games, have been improved; • Calligra Applications include Kexi for desktop DBMS solutions and Krita for painting; • LibreOffice has been updated to version 3.6.2.2 • KDE Telepathy has been updated to version 0.5.1, replacing the Kopete Instant Messenger; • Rekonq, the web browser has been upgraded to version 1.1; • Amarok media player has been updated to version 2.6.0; • OwnCloud has been upgraded to Version 4 with a host of new features including shared calendars, easier sharing of files and a more shiny photo gallery. This latest release also includes an owncloud-client, which is basically a desktop app to sync your folders to your OwnCloud.

There are also a number of known issues that have yet to be resolved, such as a bug that prevents installation from happening on some hard disks with over 10 partitions, manual setup for input methods is required, and Krita crashing with some graphics drivers.

A complete list of changes and updates can be found in the official announcement.
