Kristin Davis of the original “Melrose Place” and HBO’s “SATC” fame was never stick-thin, even if there was a time when she too wanted to be very lean and thin. In time, though, the actress has come to love her body and it is precisely this that gives her the necessary confidence to break out a two-piece swimsuit for the cover of the May 2010 issue of Fitness magazine.

The 45-year-old star has spoken before about how a healthy body image and self-esteem are actually the key to happiness in life; that, and health too, of course. Having long accepted the fact that she has hips and more curves than other women, Kristin has ceased to look different from how she’s supposed to look. This, in turn, means that all she has to do right now is keep active enough and eat healthily – and she makes sure she does plenty of both.

“I have hips! I’m never going to be the thinnest actress, and I don’t want to be. When you’re at peace with yourself and your body, you’re automatically more confident. I can’t just hop on the treadmill. I need to mix things up and enjoy what I’m doing,” the star says. So, to get the diversity she needs, Kristin alternates between Pilates, cardio, hiking and yoga, depending on what kind of a mood she’s in. What she won’t do anymore is run outdoors, having suffered some ankle injury from overdoing it when she was younger.

“I actually started running when I was cast on Melrose Place. I wanted lean legs, so I got a coach and I’d go up to Santa Barbara and run seven miles on the beach. I loved running outside, but I got so many ankle injuries over the years that I’ve had to take a break from it,” she explains. As for diet, health is the key word again. “I eat a lot of chicken, salmon, eggs and side salads. But if all I ate were salads every day, I’d shoot myself. Who cares if you can fit in your skinny jeans if you can’t enjoy life and have something good to eat? I went through periods when I said I can’t have this, I can’t have that. Now I don’t deprive myself. Food is meant to be enjoyed,” the actress explains.

Though she poses in a swimsuit, Davis also explains for Fitness that shooting her latest romantic comedy, “Couples Retreat,” was somewhat of a challenge. She’s not the type who could easily get accustomed to spending the entire day in her swimsuit, she says, but, in the end, she had to overcome her shyness.
