Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart sing on “The Runaways” official score

March 19 brings in US theaters one of the most anticipated and hyped films of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, “The Runaways,” starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. The film, telling the story of the first all-girl rock group, is already getting raving reviews with the critics. A first look at the tracklisting of the score, as revealed by Rolling Stone, shows fans will be pleasantly surprised there too.

Since this is a film about The Runaways, the rock group founded by Joan Jett, it’s no surprise that the score is a combination of original songs and covers done by the actors themselves, including Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. Their versions of the originals sit next to songs by David Bowie and Joan Jett herself and fans looking to get their hands on a copy of the album can pre-order it right now here.

“Since this is a film about the Runaways, the group’s catalog features heavily on the disc, and its track list is split between the original recordings and new versions by Fanning, who plays Cherie Currie, and Stewart, who portrays Joan Jett. Rounding out the album are 1975-era punk anthems by MC5, Nick Gilder, David Bowie and more. […] The Runaways soundtrack will be available digitally on March 16th, with a physical release planned for March 23rd. You can pre-order both formats over on the soundtrack’s official Website,” Rolling Stone says.

The cover of the soundtrack album has also been released and, to little surprise, it coincides with one of the posters for the film. The artwork shows a literal “cherry bomb,” as one of the tracks is also named, against a background offered by a worn out vinyl sleeve. The bright red against black contrast gives the artwork a very edgy, punk rock feel – and the tracks included on the score will no doubt come to make that feeling even more poignant.

The official tracklisting includes 4 tracks by the two actresses, namely “Queens Of Noise” and “Dead End Justice” (Dakota Fanning & Kristen Stewart), and “California Paradise” and “Cherry Bomb” (by Dakota Fanning). Other tracks included are “The Wild One” (Suzi Quatro), “Rebel Rebel” (David Bowie), “Hollywood” and “You Drive Me Wild” (The Runaways) and “Don’t Abuse Me” (Joan Jett).
