Hideo Kojima, the leader of the development team working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, says that the new game will have an open world structure but at the same time gamers will have clear goals that they have to achieve.

The developer has given an interview to Famitsu, quoted in VG247, in which he states that, "The game map is an open world and you have freedom in that way, but in MGS5, it’s clear what you’re doing. That may be ‘I have to help someone’ or ‘Destroy this thing’ or ‘Go gather intelligence at this spot’. Some missions will have time limits, too."

Kojima says that he decided to abandon the traditional structure of Metal Gear Solid missions, which involved a cutscene at the start and the end of all missions, because it was no longer interesting for modern players.

He adds, "it’d be fun if you were the one thinking about how and where to infiltrate, what sort of equipment to bring, and how to get out of there. I think the way that MGS is combined with an open world here is something that we haven’t really communicated very well yet."

The new Solid Snake video game is designed to revolutionize the series and will also introduce a new engine, called Fox, which will upgrade the visuals and the intelligence of all enemies.

The open world structure will also open up more possible interaction with the world and the various NPCs.

The story of the game has not yet received full details but Kojima says that he is aiming for more emotion than ever and for stronger characters that gamers will remember long after they have put down the controller.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phatom Pain will be offered on the PC, the PlayStation 3, the PS4, the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One in 2014.
