Actions cams are very popular these days and compact, little shooters like the GoPro bunch are selling like hot cakes. HTC has recently launched one such product, which takes the shape of a pipe-tube, so you can see the industry is quite flourishing.

So you won’t be surprised when we tell you old-timer Kodak has taken to making action cams too. The company has unveiled the PixPro SP360 shooter which can capture 360-degree photographs.

Kodak SP360 goes official

If the name sounds familiar to you, it’s because the device was already previewed at a bunch of events, but now Kodak is making things official, as well as releasing the full specification list.

Following the trend of life-logging, Kodak offers a camera bundled with a 16.38MP BSI-CMOS sensor and a fixed-focus lens with an aperture of f/2.8.

The camera’s main purpose might be shooting 360-degree images, but it also gives users the opportunity to choose from various shooting modes, like 214-degree Dome, 212-degree Front, Ring, Panorama and Segment.

Like many action cams released these days, the SP360 is rugged, meaning it is resistant to splashes, shocks, dust and freezing temperatures. Kodak will also throw in a special case for the camera which will bestow waterproof capabilities to the little shooter (up to 60 m / 197 ft).

The camera can shoot video at full HD resolution and 30fps. High-speed video recording is also available, with a resolution of 848 x 480 pixel and 120fps frame rate.

Additionally, the SP360 bundles Wi-Fi and NFC, so you can easily connect your smartphone or tablet and control the camera remotely.

A roundup of new action cams on the market

To compare, we’ll talk a little bit about HTC’s new RE camera. This little device arrives with a 16MP 1/ 2.3 inch sensor with ultra-wide 146-degree lens.

It can shoot 1080 video and capture 16MP photos but comes equipped with a bunch of extra features such as slow-motion video capture and time-lapse recording.

Like the Kodak cam, the RE has some rugged features and is IP57 certified, meaning you can take it out with you for a fun day at the pool.

From the same category, Ricoh rolled out the WG-30 and WG-30W rugged action cams, which take advantage of a 16MP 1/ 2.3-inch type CMOS image sensor with 4x optical zoom lens that offer 35mm focal length equivalent of 28-140mm and max aperture of f/3.5-5.5

Due to the new image processor technology, the Ricoh cameras are expected to perform quite smoothly in low-lighting conditions.

As you can see, there are lots to choose from when action cams are concerned, so before you make a decision, you better survey all the options available.
