But instead of being applauded, the guy gets ridiculed

David Dreger is a well-known face in the Xbox community. His gamertag Knuckles Dawson, has made quite a few appearances on the Internet, being recognized as a true hardcore gamer. After receiving the MVP status from Microsoft on October the 1st, he decided it was finally time to stop, clearly mentioning in his Achievement 101 entry on sister-site X3F that this doesn't mean he's going to stop playing games and get achievements.

The strange thing though is that Joystiq posts this piece of news and the guy gets ridiculed. How is this possible? Isn't everyone that posts a comment up on websites such a Joystiq.com supposed to encourage this type of activities?

Remarks like "I'd hate to be that guy" or "Achievements don't do anything" flow one after another in a constant manner, begging the question: is everyone jealous or simply not that much into gathering points? Some even ridiculed the guy for stopping just 19 days before hitting the 700 day landmark. Why?, they asked. Well, if they had bothered to read his post, they'd have found out:

"...the record I set was for 681 days, from November 22nd 2005 to October 4th, 2007", says Dreger. "Sure, the number isn't anything special, but definitely nothing to scoff at. It feels quite liberating, actually. And I'm grateful that something that started out so simple has gotten the acknowledgement it has. [...] That all being said, that doesn't mean that I've A) stopped playing games or B) lost interest in getting Achievements."

Dreger even promises that "next up on the list is 55,000 then 55,555. I may try to pull of 54,321 to mirror my original 12,345." Why not, right? It's the guy's time and if this makes him happy, we encourage him to keep up the good work, but of course, not neglecting school and cleaning up his room every now and then.
