A Japanese company, AlphaSystems Inc released version 1.0 of Accelerated Knoppix, a version of the Knoppix live CD distribution optimized for boot speed.

The team rearranged the cloop file system and further optimized the hardware detection and configuration step, bringing the total boot time to under 60 seconds, yet maintains the full functionality of the distribution, the company says. The tools used to optimize Knoppix can also be used to optimize other cloop-based live distributions. LCAT can be found here.

Other live CD distributions (standard Knoppix included) suffer from slow boot times due to hardware detection and on-the-fly decompression of the operating system, Alpha said. This faster-booting variant optimizes those parts of the file system.

Knoppix is a general purpose Live Linux distribution which can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, and more. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD distro can hold up to 2GB of software.

Additional details (mostly in Japanese) can be found at the project's page.
