About a week or so ago, shortly after “Fat Actress” star Kirstie Alley announced that she would be launching a weight loss program made of several other products, speculation began to circulate that the newly set up company might be nothing but a front for the Church of Scientology. The star denied the claims in an interview on Today – and she continues to do so in a statement cited by People magazine.

Kirstie, it would seem, was not prepared to be asked whether her company funded Scientology on Today and she’s shocked the question ever came up. As per her own words, having to justify herself like that is the irrefutable proof that people continue to be intolerant and narrow minded. After all, when she was a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, the highly successful weight loss program, no one asked her what she was doing with her money, she says.

“That I would need to clarify or defend the intentions or affiliations of my LLC business corporation in the year 2010 is indicative of the intolerances that we as a country still need to overcome. However, after the Today show brought fringe bigotry and intolerance into the forefront of the national media I feel compelled to clarify [myself],” Alley said earlier this week after a screening of her upcoming reality show, as cited by People.

“Organic Liaison LLC is not affiliated with the Church of Scientology or the world institute of Scientology. Here’s the deal: if I wanted this to be a scientology company exclusively, I would have made it that way. And I would have told the world ‘This is the first-ever Scientology whatever!’ I have nothing against doing that. It’s odd. You wouldn’t say, ‘What religion is Jenny Craig?’ No one knows and no one cares! It’s a cheap shot,” the actress further explains.

Rumors that the company, Organic Liaison, might be tied to Scientology and even be funding it started to pick up after anti-Scientology group Anonymous pointed out that two execs were Scientology big shots, while the headquarters of the company coincided with those of the Church. Alley admits that 10 percent of her employees are members of the cult, but that proves absolutely nothing as regards ongoing speculation, she insists.
